The Toronto Symphony Orchestra (TSO) and Music Director Gustavo Gimeno have introduced the appointment of Nicholas Sharma because the TSO’s subsequent RBC Resident Conductor, and conductor of the Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra (TSYO). Sharma’s tenure begins with the 2025/26 season.
“Nicholas brings a good looking naturalness to his conducting—musical, assured, and calm,” says Music Director Gustavo Gimeno in an announcement. “He has an ease and readability on the rostrum that instantly resonates with musicians, together with a considerate and fascinating presence. Nicholas was chosen following a nationwide search, and audition course of. He’ll be taking on from Trevor Wilson, who has served in each capacities with the TSO and TSYO since 2022.
Nicholas Sharma, conductor
Canadian-American conductor Nicholas Sharma is a local of Toronto. He earned a Bachelor’s diploma in Violin Efficiency from the Eastman College of Music, adopted by a Masters in Orchestral Conducting from the College of Oregon. He continued his research, and holds a Doctorate of Musical Arts (DMA) in Orchestral Conducting from the Eastman College of Music.
He has labored with the New World Symphony Orchestra in Miami and the Nationwide Academy Orchestra of Canada, and with distinguished conductors akin to Michael Tilson Thomas, Neeme Järvi, Boris Brott, Robert Spano and Francesco Lecce-Chong, amongst others.
He served as Assistant Conductor of the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra and the Music Director of the South Dakota Symphony Youth Orchestra for the 2024/25 season.
The Position
As RBC Resident Conductor, Nicholas can be working closing with the orchestra’s inventive management group, together with Gustavo Gimeno to assist assist the TSO’s mainstage programming.
