MAGNET Unique: Premiere Of Liza Lo’s “Catch The Door”

For Liza Lo, “Catch The Door” is a potent metaphor for the “complexities of disagreement” and the “worry of loving.” Particularly in the case of these closest to her.

“I wrote this tune once I was in a really low state,” says the London-based singer/songwriter. “I’d been having this melancholic feeling for a few months, unsure what it was. I sat down on a wet April night, and one way or the other the tune and all of the feelings got here out.”

“Catch The Door” is the newest single from Acquainted, Lo’s spectacular debut, which is out January 31 through Gearbox. Acquainted was produced by Jon Kelly (Kate Bush, Paul McCartney) at Damon Albarn’s Studio 13 in West London, and its unassumingly unique indie-pop framework is knowledgeable by the 26-year-old artist’s upbringing in Amsterdam and Majorca, Spain. All through the album, Lo assumes the function of the weary traveler, heading off tragedy and discovering fleeting moments of magnificence as she grapples with the uncertainty of an itinerant life. With its two distinct actions—as soon as insistent, the opposite resigned—“Catch The Door” is a microcosm of that circuitous route.

“Determining the construction of the tune with the band was fairly exhausting,” says Lo. “(Bassist) Freek (Mulder) and I sat on the studio flooring for about an hour to attempt to glue the 2 components collectively. We determined it’d be finest if I sat within the room with my guitar with the remainder of the band. We needed to ensure the power and drive between all our devices was proper—particularly after we made it to the post-chorus, which is by far my favourite half to the tune.”

We’re proud to premiere Liza Lo’s “Catch The Door.”
